What are widgets?
They are the secret to ultimate UNBRIDLED POWER OVER CAPTIVATE! Need Captivate to do something it can’t out of the box? Widgets are the answer.
Need a drag and drop question? Widgets can do that.
Need some text to act like a hyperlink? Widgets can do that.
Need to gain access to system variables to do something that’s not possible with Advanced Actions? Widgets can do that.
Need an anything else? Widgets can do that. (Probably)
Yeah okay… So what are widgets?
A widget is an .swf that can communicate with Captivate. Think of them as plug-ins. Little software programs in their own right. Some plug-ins are simple and specific, others extremely complicated and versatile.
Widgets are coded in ActionScript, the language used by the Adobe Flash Player. Any program that writes ActionScript and publishes to .swf can create widgets. Such as:
There are three types of widgets:
- Static: The generic type of widget. All other widgets are Static widgets with extra abilities.
- Interactive: A static widget that has success and failure criteria. They are very similar to buttons, in that they allow the Captivate author to define actions to be taken when the success or failure criteria have been fulfilled.
- Question: A widget that acts as a Captivate Question Type.

Hi, I have captivate 5 and am fairly new to eLearning although not new to learning. I cannot get past this yellow box appearing around the rewind button when I was the user to press the Tab key. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Hi Dianne, the yellow box is there to show that the button has come into tab focus.
You might want to check out Chris Dorna’s Tab Order widget which changes the items that Captivate will focus on when tab is pressed. This will allow you to completely remove the playbar from the tab order, and therefore: no yellow boxes on their buttons.
If this is not what you’re looking for, then could you please answer these two questions:
1: Did you only want to stop the yellow box appearing and keep the button in the tab order, or did you want to remove the button from the whole tab order?
2: Did you only want to do the above action to the rewind button, or to all the buttons on the playbar?
